Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Sand Gnats (10-18) previewed the postgame fireworks with an explosion of their own, a seven-run first inning off Emilis Guerrero that propelled Savannah to a 9-6 win in front of 2,937 at Historic Grayson Stadium.
The Crawdads (15-14) came all the way back and trailed 7-6 in the eighth with the tying run on first, but Edgar Ramirez struck out Miles Durham to preserve the lead.
Savannah scored a season-best seven runs in the first on seven hits. The biggest hits were an RBI triple from Michael Hernandez, a two-run double from Richard Pena and a two-run triple from Richard Lucas.
Scott Moviel (2-4) earned the win after losing four straight, tossing a season-high 6.0 innings and allowing 3 runs on 7 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 2.
Guerrero (0-2) recovered remarkably well, retiring 15-of-16 Savannah hitters after the first inning. Still, the damage was done and Guerrero took the loss, allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits while striking out 2.
Pena led the way for Savannah in his return from the disabled list, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Joaquin Rodriguez, Greg Veloz and Hernandez each contributed two hits for the Sand Gnats.
Ramirez struck out three in 1.2 innings of work to earn his first save.
The Sand Gnats begin an eight-game road trip Saturday at 7:05 p.m. from Asheville, N.C. when they face the Tourists. RHP Elvin Ramirez (2-1, 4.03) will start for the Gnats while Bruce Billings (2-1, 4.67) gets the nod for Asheville. The Sand Gnats return home May 12 to begin an eight-game homestand when they host the Tourists at 7 p.m. For tickets or more information call 912-351-9150 or visit www.sandgnats.com.
