Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Salisbury, Md.- When word broke shortly before the game that Shorebird ace John Mariotti would be scratched from his scheduled start, there must have been some disappointment in the clubhouse and in the stands. Little did everyone know that four members of the Delmarva bullpen would combine to yield just one run and four hits in nine impressive innings, giving the Shorebirds a 6-1 victory over the Legends in the series finale on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Sean Gleason got the last minute start and resembled Mariotti on the hill in terms of his dominance. Gleason tossed four shutout innings, striking out four and allowing one hit, a bunt single in the third. Relieving Gleason was Cliff Flagello, who earned his first victory with three solid innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits. Brett Bordes and Mick Mattaliano each through a scoreless inning as well, as Delmarva proved their pitching depth against a solid Lexington lineup.

While the Shorebirds trailed 1-0 in the middle of the fifth, their time spent behind was short-lived. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth. When Joe Mahoney popped up for the second out and Anthony Martinez fell behind in the count, things looked bleak, but the Shorebirds would find a unique way to score.

On an 0-1 pitch from Lexington starter Carlos Ladeuth, the baseball flew past the catcher to the backstop. Matt Angle came home from third, while the other two runners moved up ninety feet to second and third. But the play did not end there. As Matt Tucker took a wide turn around third base, Lexington launched the ball down the line to try to find an out. Incredibly, the toss went all the way into left-field, and both Tucker and Tyler Henson came home to score. Three runs on a wild pitch and an error, and Delmarva was on the board with a lead they would not relinquish.

Delmarva added one in the seventh and two in the eighth to provide some insurance for the late-inning tossers. Though it was not a save situation, Mattaliano entered in the ninth and did not allow the ball to leave the infield in his perfect frame, propelling the Shorebirds to their third win in four game against Lexington.
