Augusta Takes Three of Four from RiverDogs, Win 10-6

CHARLESTON, SC - Augusta's offense pounded out ten runs while starting pitcher Craig Clark faced the minimum of 15 batters through five innings as the GreenJackets defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 10-6, in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of 5,827 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Augusta wins the final three games in the four-game series and improves to 14-15 on the season. Charleston, which suffers its first series loss of the 2008 campaign, falls to 20-8. The RiverDogs have now dropped five of seven overall and have fallen out of first place in the Southern Division standings for the first time this season. With Asheville's 3-0 win over Columbus, the Tourists have moved ½ game ahead of Charleston to take over first place in the circuit.

The GreenJackets led 8-1 after 6 ½ innings, with four of those runs being driven in by third baseman Andrew Davis. After the GreenJackets plated a run in the top of the first, Davis ripped a two-run triple in the third against RiverDogs starter Noel Castillo (3-2) to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Then with the score 6-1 in the seventh, Davis lined a two-run double off of reliever Gabe Medina to highlight Augusta's second three-run inning of the night. In three games played in the series, Davis went 7-for-12 at the plate with two walks, six RBIs and two runs scored.

Clark (2-0), meanwhile, dominated the RiverDogs en route to his second win of the season. The left-hander retired 13 straight batters from the first through the fifth innings before Brian Baisley lined a lead-off double in the sixth. Clark allowed only one run on four hits total in six full innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Charleston rallied for four runs in the home half of the seventh against Augusta reliever Daniel Runzler, highlighted by Taylor Holiday's two-run double, to cut the deficit to 8-5.

But Augusta came right back in the eighth with two more runs against Charleston's third hurler Ryan Zink. Brock Bond's RBI single highlighted the rally, which also extended his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games.

Baisley capped the scoring with a solo home run against Augusta's Joe Paterson in the ninth, his first of the season. Paterson worked the final two innings for the GreenJackets with Baisley's bomb his lone blemish.

Davis paced Augusta's 11-hit attack by going 3-for-5 with four RBI. Neal was the only other GreenJacket with multiple hits as he collected a pair, while Nick Noonan also drove in two runs. In the last two games of the series, the Augusta's offense accounted for a total of 16 runs on 24 hits.

Baisley and Holiday each recorded a pair of knocks to lead Charleston's eight-hit effort. The RiverDogs now head out for an eight-game road trip, with four games at Hickory beginning Saturday at 7:00 pm, followed by four more games at Asheville. On Saturday, the RiverDogs will send right-hander Adam Olbrychowski (1-2, 4.37 ERA) to the mound while the Crawdads are expected to counter with righty Dustin Molleken (2-1, 3.67).
