Drillers Fail to Hold Early Lead in Loss to Cards

SPRINGFIELD, MO - Chris Parmelee and Cody Thomas staked the Tulsa Drillers to an early three-run lead Monday night with second-inning home runs, but the Springfield Cardinals responded with five straight runs, four coming on two home runs from Irving Lopez, and eventually posted a 6-5 victory at Hammons Field.

The defeat leaves Tulsa with a 1-3 record on its current road trip and a 5-6 mark on the season. It was the fifth straight win for the Cardinals after beginning the season with seven straight losses.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

- Parmelee's home run was a tape-measure blast that landed on the clubhouse building beyond the right field wall. It was the second homer of the season for the former Twins, Orioles and Yankees first baseman.

- Later in the second inning, Zach Reks singled in front of Cody Thomas' second homer of the year.

- Tulsa starting pitcher Justin De Fratus opened the game with two perfect innings, but he ran into trouble in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff single by Scott Hurst, Lopez hit a two-run homer to pull the Cards to within 3-2. A solo home run from Chris Chinea tied the game in the fourth before Lopez struck again in the fifth. The Redbirds leadoff man belted his second two-run homer of the night to put Springfield in front to stay.

- Three singles from Reks, Jared Walker and Omar Estevez in the top of the sixth pulled the Drillers two within 5-4.

- The Cards added a critical insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to two runs. It proved critical because Gavin Lux led off the ninth with his second home run of the season, accounting for the final score.

- For the second straight game, the Drillers lost despite out-hitting their opponent. After losing on Sunday despite throwing a no-hitter, the Drillers out-hit the Cardinals 13-5. Reks and Estevez led the attack with three hits each, while Lux and Keibert Ruiz added two each.

- Tulsa hitters struck out 15 times in the game.
