Drapluk's Natural Hat Trick Pushes Oilers Past Eagles, 6-3
February 24, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
TULSA, OK. - Tulsa defenseman Eric Drapluk registered a natural hat trick, as the Oilers scored five straight goals to rally from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Colorado Eagles 6-3 on Saturday. Eagles forwards Ryan Olsen, Ryan Harrison and Drayson Bowman each netted goals for Colorado in the loss. Sam Brittain suffered the loss in net, giving up five goals on 39 shots. Devin Williams collected the win in goal for Tulsa, making 35 saves on 38 shots in the contest.
Olsen put Colorado in the lead early when he buried a shot from the low slot to give the Eagles a 1-0 edge just 3:48 into the contest. That lead would grow to a pair when a 2-on-1 rush for Colorado led to forward Ryan Harrison snapping a wrister past Williams to make it a 2-0 Eagles advantage at the 12:10 mark of the first period.
Tulsa would strike back just minutes later, as forward Joey Sides would hammer a one-timer from between the circles into the back of the net to trim Colorado's lead to 2-1 with 5:31 left in the period. Just 33 seconds later, Drapluk tucked a rebound on the side of the crease past Eagles goalie Sam Brittain to level the score at 2-2.
Moving into the second period, the Oilers would claim their first lead of the night when Drapluk stuffed home a rebound off a net-mouth scramble to put Tulsa up 3-2 at the 16:43 mark of the middle frame. Drapluk would then complete the natural hat trick when a Colorado turnover led to a 2-on-1 rush that the defenseman would finalize with a wrist shot past Brittain to give the Oilers a 4-2 lead with only 24 seconds remaining in the period.
Tulsa forward Charlie Sampair would continue the onslaught into the third period when he fired a wrister from between the circles and lit the lamp to stretch the Oilers advantage to 5-2 with 8:32 gone in the final stanza. Olsen would earn a penalty shot minutes later in the period, but Williams would deny the effort to keep Tulsa on top 5-2.
Colorado would finally stem the tide when Bowman fielded a clean face-off win in the offensive zone and zipped a shot past Williams to cut the Oilers lead to 5-3 with 4:05 remaining in regulation. With Brittain pulled in favor of the extra attacker, Tulsa forward Garrett Ladd would add an empty-netter with 1:44 left to play to give the Oilers the 6-3 victory.
The Eagles finished the night going 0-for-5 on the power play, but were a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Colorado returns to action when they take on the Tulsa Oilers at the Budweiser Events Center on Wednesday, February 28th at 7:05pm MT.
