Dragons Win in twelve innings

Dayton Dragons News Release

Beloit, Wis.-Dave Sappelt scored all the way from first base on a mishandled base hit with two outs in the top of the 12th inning to break a 3-3 tie as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Beloit Snappers 4-3 on Friday night. The victory allowed the Dragons to earn their first series win of the season. They won two of three games in Beloit.

With two outs and the bases empty in the top of the 12th, Sappelt reached on an error by Beloit shortstop James Beresford. Sappelt was running on the pitch when the next batter, Cody Puckett, lined a hit to left. Beloit left fielder Adan Severino allowed the ball to skip past him as Sappelt sprinted home to break the tie.

Scott Gaffney pitched a perfect bottom of the 12th to close out the win for the Dragons. Dragons relief pitchers combined to work eight scoreless innings in the game.

Dragons starting pitcher J.C. Sulbaran made his much-awaited professional debut. The right-hander who pitched for Team Netherlands in the Olympics and the World Baseball Classic, endured a rough first inning but followed that with three scoreless frames.

Sulbaran gave up a pair of home runs in the first inning, the only two hits he allowed in the game. Over four innings, he allowed three runs, all in the first, with four walks and four strikeouts. He also hit two batters.

Trailing 3-0, the Dragons took advantage of some wildness by Beloit starting pitcher Shooter Hunt to score two runs in the second inning. Hunt issued four walks in the inning including one with the bases loaded to Cody Puckett, and also uncorked two wild pitches including one that allowed a run to score to make it 3-2.

The Dragons scored again in the third when Tony Brown singled, went to second on Humberto Sosa's walk, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Kevin Coddington's sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.

Neither club scored after the third inning until the Dragons tie-breaking run in the 12th. Dragons pitchers shutout the Snappers over the final 11 innings of the game.

The Dragons travel to Fort Wayne to meet the TinCaps in the first game of a three-game series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. Matt Fairel (1-1, 2.61), who earned the Midwest League pitcher of the week award last week, will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's Nick Schmidt (1-0, 5.94). The Dragons next home game is Tuesday, May 5th against the Clinton Lumber Kings at Fifth Third Field.

Notes: The Dragons sent pitcher Leonardo Astorga to Billings to make room on the roster for Sulbaran. Astorga was 0-3, 18.00 in four starts.
