South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Davenport, IA - With a 7-3 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits Friday night, the South Bend Silver Hawks ended a three game losing streak, and in the process snapped a six game winning streak for Quad Cities.
The Silver Hawks rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the top of the seventh against reliever Arquimedes Nieto (LP, 0-2). Jake Elmore and Alberto Diaz singled to start the inning, putting runners at the corners for Justin Parker. Parker, who earlier in the night extended his hitting streak to nine games, came through again with a double down the left field line, plating two for the 4-3 lead. Two outs later with Parker at third, Rossmel Perez singled to center, scoring Parker and extending the lead to 5-3.
What was billed as a great pitcher's duel on paper was anything but that in the first two innings. The Silver Hawks jumped on Quad Cities starter Adam Veres (ND) for two runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a walk, an error, and an RBI double from Nelson Gomez. Veres entered the game with a 2-0 record and a 0.82 ERA, and departed after 3.2 innings without factoring in the decision.
South Bend starter Ryan Cook (WP, 3-0) entered the game with a similar 2-0 record and a 1.42 ERA, but like Veres, had some trouble in the early innings. Quad Cities put a run on the board in each of the first two innings to tie the game at two. Osvaldo Morales picked up his league leading 21st RBI in the first, and former Notre Dame star Brett Lilley had an RBI in the second.
Cook settled down, not allowing another run until the bottom of the sixth inning. Chris Swauger doubled to start the inning, and went to third on a single from Jon Edwards. Charles Cutler followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Swauger for the 3-2 lead at the time.
After the Hawks rallied to put Cook in line for the win, T.J. Hose (ND) and Justin Mace (ND) held the River Bandits hitless over the final three innings to preserve the victory. Hose struck out four in his two innings, while Mace set down the Bandits 1-2-3 in the ninth in a non-save situation.
The Silver Hawks continue the six-game road trip with three against the Kane County Cougars in Geneva, Illinois beginning Saturday evening. RHP Sean Morgan (0-0, 0.96 ERA) will make his first start of the year for the Silver Hawks, while Kane County will give the starting nod to LHP Anthony Capra (0-0, 3.21 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM Eastern Time on Saturday, with pregame coverage beginning at 5:40 PM on 1620 AM WPNT "The Point" and online at www.silverhawks.com.
