
Marathon game goes to Whitecaps, 6-5

May 1, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and West Michigan Whitecaps wrapped up their three game series with a 15-inning marathon on Friday afternoon at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium with the Whitecaps winning 6-5. Brett Wyatt's RBI single off Kernel reliever Francis Cabrera (1-2) in the top of the 15th was the deciding run.
Kernels starter Christian Scholl allowed three runs on five hits over five innings pitched in making a spot start. Alexi Amarista was 4 for 7 in the game with an RBI and Gabe Jacobo was 3 for 6 with a double and 2 RBI. Dwayne Bailey, playing his first game for the Kernels, was 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Joe Bowen and Brian Pounds each had two RBI for West Michigan as reliever Tyler Conn (1-0) allowed a hit and struck out three over two innings for the win. Whitecap starter Casey Crosby allowed four runs on six hits over four innings pitched and struck out six.
The loss drops the Kernels to 10-11, the first time they've been below .500 this season. West Michigan improves to 15-5.
The Kernels continue their home stand with a three game series with the Peoria Chiefs, the MWL affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, starting Saturday, May 2nd at 6:35 pm. The Kernels welcome special guests from Coolidge and Jackson schools to the game.
