
Nominees For April Player Of The Month Announced

DAYTON, OH - For the fourth consecutive season, the Dayton Dragons and 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM have teamed up to honor the Dayton Dragons 1410 ESPN Radio Hitter and Pitcher of the Month. Fans can log on to www.daytondragons.com upon the completion of each month and vote for who they feel were the best Dragons players over the past 30 days.
Each month, three hitters and three pitchers will be selected as nominees based on their performances on the field. The hitting nominees for the month of April are Kyle Day, Dave Sappelt, and Byron Wiley. The pitching nominees are Matt Fairel, Lance Janke, and Josh Ravin.
The winning players for the month of April will be honored on Thursday, May 7th during an inning break of the game against the Clinton Lumberkings. Mark Neal, Program Director for WING-AM and host of Dayton Sports Scene, will present the award to the winning players on the field. There will also be a Player of the Month luncheon on May 8th at Skyline Chili on Brown Street in Dayton at 12:00 noon. Fans may attend to ask questions to the winning players and receive autographs. The players will be available to the media for interviews.
Below are the nominees for April (with stats through April 27th):
Hitter of the Month Nominees:
- IF Kyle Day - Hit .286 and tied for the team lead with six extra-base hits (four doubles, two triples). He also led the team in walks and was second in on-base percentage.
- OF Dave Sappelt - Hit .292 with a homer and five RBI, primarily from the leadoff spot. He also had a nine-game hit streak, tied for the team lead in extra-base hits, and was among the league leaders in stolen bases with seven. He also scored a team-high 11 runs.
- OF Byron Wiley - Led the team in batting average (.353) and tied for the team lead in runs batted in with seven. His .452 on-base percentage led the team, as did his .894 OPS.
Pitcher of the Month Nominees:
- LHP Matt Fairel - Went 1-1 in four starts with a 2.61 ERA and a team-high 24 strikeouts. He was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for April 20-26, during which he went 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts. He came within two strikeouts of a club record when he struck out 12 Great Lakes Loons on April 21st.
- RHP Lance Janke - Posted a team best 1.93 ERA in four appearances, including one spot-start. He allowed just nine baserunners (seven hits, two walks) in 14 innings pitched while striking out 13 batters. His opponents' batting average (.146) and WHIP (0.64) both led the team.
- RHP Josh Ravin - Went 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA, allowing fewer earned runs (four) than any other Dragons starter. He led all starters in opponents' batting average (.192) and WHIP (1.07) and was second in innings pitched (15.0).
