Great Lakes Loons News Release

APPLETON, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers notched a 6-4 victory Friday night over the Great Lakes Loons to secure a 2-1 series win. The game featured a unique play in the third when Loons' catcher Tony Delmonico tagged two runners out at the plate trying to score on a single to right by Brett Lawrie.

Wisconsin never trailed in the game and did score two in the third prior to the bizarre play at the plate. The play occurred with Cutter Dykstra at second and Juan Sanchez at first. Lawrie hit a ball into right field over the head of Loons' right fielder Jerry Sands. Dykstra waited to see if the ball would be caught before taking off for third and the plate with Sanchez closely behind. Sands relayed a strong throw to Jaime Pedroza, who made a one-hop throw to Delmonico, who applied the tag to Dykstra sliding to the outside part of the plate and to Sanchez sliding to the infield side of the plate.

Kyle Russell led off the fourth with a double and scored on a Delmonico single to pull Great Lakes to within one. But Timber Rattlers manager Jeff Isom pulled starter Cody Scarpetta and Daniel Meadows retired the side.

After Wisconsin scored in the bottom of the fourth, the Loons again pulled to within one on a single by Austin Gallagher scoring Elian Herrera, who had walked.

The Timber Rattlers' big inning was the sixth when they scored three off reliever Luis Garcia. The Loons inched closer with a run in the eighth on a balk charged to pitcher Brandon Richie. They then scored another in the ninth on a single by Jaime Pedroza. Pedroza represented the tying run at first base when Austin Gallagher grounded out to end the game.

Meadows (2-0) recorded the scorers-decision win. Loons' starter Nathan Eovaldi (0-3) was charged with three earned runs in four innings for the loss.

Steve Smith pitched two scoreless relief innings and hasn't allowed a run in his two outings (4 1/3 innings).

The Loons begin a three-game series against the Beloit Snappers Saturday afternoon from Pohlman Field. Game time is 3pm ET. The game will be carried live on ESPN 100.9-FM.

Right-hander JonMichael Redding (2-1, 5.50) will start for the Loons opposite right-hander Michael Bowman (0-1).

The Great Lakes Loons are the third-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
