Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - West Michigan's Jordan Pearce collected three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Whitecaps to a 6-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday night. The game was the start of a three-game series that will conclude the Dragons home season. They host the Whitecaps Thursday and Friday nights in their final games of 2018 at Fifth Third Field.
The loss officially eliminated the Dragons from post-season contention. They have five games to play including three road games starting Saturday at Bowling Green.
West Michigan scored two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. The Dragons responded with one run in their half of the second on a two-out RBI single by Leandro Santana.
The Whitecaps built their lead to 4-1 with two runs in the top of the third. The Dragons scored a single run in the bottom of the third on a two-out double by Hendrik Clementina that brought in J.D. Williams from first base to make it 4-2.
But West Michigan kept their offense going, scoring runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 6-2 lead, and they shutout the Dragons over the final six innings. The Dragons best chance to score came in the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs on two walks and an infield single, but Clementina struck out to end the threat.
Dayton starting pitcher Austin Orewiler (5-5) went six innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits with no walks and five strikeouts to suffer the loss. Andy Cox replaced Orewiler to start the seventh and fired two scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and a walk, and Connor Bennett pitched a perfect ninth inning.
The Dragons finished with nine hits. J.D. Williams had two hits and a walk. Jeter Downs also had two hits. Clementina's double was the only extra base hit.
