MWL1 Great Lakes Loons

Down, But Never out in Dayton

July 25, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

DAYTON, Ohio - Friday night at Fifth Third Field was supposed to be about 2019 seventh-overall-pick Nick Lodolo making his single-A debut and Kyle Farmer making a rehab appearance from Cincinnati. Instead, the Great Lakes Loons pulled off an unlikely three-run, ninth-inning comeback to deflate and defeat the Dayton Dragons, 6-4.

The win for Great Lakes was unlikely in many ways... Just to give the offense a chance in the ninth inning, the bullpen combination of Zach Willeman, Mark Washington and Jasiel Alvino retired the final 16 batters of the game in order. Then in the ninth, Gersel Pitre tied the game on a single before nine-spot hitter Dan Robinson scored two more on a double.

Pitre has been with the Loons since Opening Day but has only had the opportunity to play in five games. He made his opportunity count on Friday night by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. The 23-year-old Venezuelan joins Miguel Vargas as the only Loons this year to tally four hits in one game.

After Willeman retired the final batter of the fourth inning, Washington pitched three perfect innings with a career-high seven strikeouts. Alvino (W, 3-1) struck out two Dragons to close the book on Dayton.

The Loons win was just their second ninth-inning comeback of the year. The other came on May 29th in Bowling Green.

A sweep is now possible for the Loons going into the series finale on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:08 p.m. EDT.
