Doubleheader Sweep Gives Keys Series Split

June 2, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, Md.-The Frederick Keys earned a doubleheader sweep of the Lynchburg Hillcats on Tuesday afternoon at Nymeo Field. Earning a 3-1 victory in game one, the orange and black were lifted by Trey Mancini and Tucker Nathans, who each hit first inning home runs. In game two, the Keys trio of Chris Lee, Jimmy Yacabonis and Cody Wheeler combined on a 3-0 shutout, the team's fourth of the season. With the sweep, the Keys pull within 1.5 games of the Wilmington Blue Rocks for first in the CL North standings.

Frederick jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead against Hillcats starter Luis Lugo in game one. After Josh Hart led off the bottom of the first with a single, Nathans slugged a two-run homer to right. Mancini then followed with a solo shot to left which just stayed fair. It marked the first time in 2015 that the Keys had hit back-to-back home runs. In the inning, eight Keys came to bat while Lugo need 32 pitches to get out of the frame.

Mitch Horacek earned his fourth straight win against the Hillcats tossing five innings of one-run baseball. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out five. The lone mistake for Horacek (4-5) came in the fourth inning, when he surrendered a solo home run to Bradley Zimmer.

Lynchburg had numerous chances to tie the game or take the lead, but finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Perhaps the Hillcats best chance came in the sixth inning. With two outs, a wild pitch by Jon Keller advanced runners to second and third, but the Keys righty got a groundout to keep both men in place.

Keller would work a clean seventh to earn his third save. In two innings he allowed two hits and struck out one.

In the afternoon matchup, Frederick earned its first shutout win since May 9 at Potomac. Coming off a rocky start last Thursday against Salem, Lee (2-1) allowed four walks, but gave up only one hit and worked around traffic over five shutout innings. Like in game one, Lynchburg finished hitless with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-5.

Held without a knock in their first two at-bats, the Keys scored twice off Lynchburg starter Mitch Brown in the third. Johnny Ruettiger opened the inning with a single and moved to second after an errant pickoff throw. A sac-bunt by Phil Llewellyn advanced Ruettiger to third, before he scored on a wild pitch with Mancini at bat. The Keys first baseman would then add an RBI double to make it 2-0.

Brown (1-6) walked six in the game, including three in the bottom of the fifth. Following a walk to T.J. Olesczuk, Brown retired Mancini before issuing three straight free passes to force in a run. Tagged with the loss, Brown allowed three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. He struck out two and threw a pair of wild pitches.

Yacabonis and Wheeler each worked scoreless innings to wrap up the 3-0 win. Wheeler also received credit for his eighth save moving him into a tie with Salem's Austin Maddox for the league lead.

Frederick has a scheduled off-day on Wednesday before hitting the road for a four-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Thursday night. Right-hander David Hess (2-2, 5.07) makes the start for the Keys and will be opposed by Blue Crew lefty Eric Skoglund (3-2, 2.30). The Keys return home on Monday, June 8 at 7:00 p.m when the Myrtle Beach Pelicans come to town. For tickets, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
