Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA (JUNE 2, 2015) - On a chilly Tuesday evening, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, fell to the Potomac Nationals in 11 innings by a final score of 4-3 in the continuation of a suspended contest from the night before. Nationals shortstop Stephen Perez delivered the game-winning single off of Pelicans reliever Jasvir Rakkar.
The suspended match up resumed were it was when the delay began, amidst a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the tenth inning with a 2-2 count against Nationals left fielder Isaac Ballou, who was batting with one out and no runners on base. The Pelicans (32-16) stuck with Rakkar to continue the contest on Tuesday, and with the first pitch of the tenth inning, the right-hander retired Ballou with a swinging strikeout. The Nationals (22-29) threatened after that with back-to-back singles, but Rakkar induced a fly out to left by first baseman John Wooten to end the frame.
Derek Self came on as the new Nationals pitcher for the top of the eleventh inning, retiring the first two batters he faced. The right-hander allowed consecutive singles to Daniel Lockhart and Mark Zagunis, but struck out Pin-Chieh Chen swinging to keep the game tied.
Rakkar remained for the home half of the eleventh, allowing back-to-back singles with one out, but retired Christopher Bostick on a strikeout. Perez then singled up the middle to drive in the winning run, walking off the Pelicans with a 4-3 final.
The game began as a pitchers' duel on Monday between Pelicans starter Jen-Ho Tseng and Nationals prospect Lucas Giolito. Before weather interfered, the game sailed into the sixth inning with no score until Victor Caratini broke it open with a bases-loaded double that scored two runs. After back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom of the same inning, Nationals first baseman John Wooten slapped a game-tying double to left field to even the score at 2-2. Until that point, Tseng had worked around nine base hits. The double to Wooten ended the right-hander's night after 5 1/3 innings on the mound and a career-high ten hits allowed. He allowed two runs, both earned, while walking one and striking out one.
Right-hander Juan Paniagua entered the game and induced a ground ball back to the mound before striking out right fielder Estarlin Martinez looking, stranding the go-ahead run in scoring position. Paniagua worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief with four strikeouts.
With the contest tied at two runs apiece, Pin-Chieh Chen singled with one out in the tenth inning. Chesny Young then lined a base hit to right field, but Chen was thrown out attempting to reach third base. As the rainfall intensified, Jeimer Candelario popped a fly ball to shallow right field, but former Pelicans second baseman Christopher Bostick dropped the catch, allowing Young to score the go-ahead run.
The Nationals struck again when Bostick led off the bottom of the frame with a triple. He flared a shallow fly ball to left-center field, and as the center fielder Chen and left fielder Kevin Brown converged, the ball skipped past both men to put the tying run at third. Perez tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left field, but with a 2-2 count on Ballou, the next hitter, the game went into a delay.
After a 34-minute rain delay, the game was suspended.
In his second appearance against the Birds this year, Giolito (1-3) took a no decision despite striking out nine Pelicans batters through five shutout innings. He walked two and surrendered two hits.
Rakkar (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out a pair as he suffered his first loss of the year. Self (2-0) fired one scoreless inning, allowing a pair of hits and striking out one.
