'Dogs with 19 hits, but thrown for a curve, lose 6-5 in 12 innings

(Altoona, PA) - LF Mel Rojas delivered two-out RBI single in the 12th inning, giving the Altoona Curve (56-65) a 6-5 walk-off win over the Portland Sea Dogs (58-64) on Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Portland tied a season-high with 19 hits, receiving a multi-hit game from seven of nine starters.

LHP Eric Niesen (0-1) took the loss for Portland, allowing two runs on four hits over 2.2 IP. Alex Dickerson led off the home 12th win a single, advanced to second on a one-out ground, and scored the game-winning on Rojas' single to left.

RHP Jason Townsend (5-3) tossed the 12th to earn the win for the Curve. Altoona's bullpen worked nine innings on 14 hits, four runs (three earned), no walks and seven strikeouts.

SS Deven Marrero went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI in his second Double-A start. LF Ryan Dent and 2B Derrik Gibson had three hits. Altoona received a hit from eight of nine starters.

The Sea Dogs made Nick Kingham (ND, 3 IP) throw 34 pitches in the third inning and took a 1-0 lead. Dent singled and advanced to third base on two wild pitches. After a Gibson walk, Marrero knocked in his first Double-A run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Altoona rebounded with a two-spot in the third off LHP Chris Hernandez. Alen Hanson tied the game by reaching on a run-scoring error by Gibson. Gregory Polanco knocked in the go-ahead run with a single, but Hernandez got Dickerson to hit into a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded to end the inning. Dickerson responded in the fifth, nailing an RBI, giving the Curve a 3-1 lead.

Hernandez took his second straight no-decision, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits over 5.2 IP.

The 'Dogs tied the game at three in the seventh inning, scoring two runs off Jhonthan Ramos. Ronald Bermudez (2-for-5) began the rally with an infield single and advanced to third on a double by Dent. Zach Thornton relieved Ramos, and yielded a wild pitch to score a run with one out. Marrero tied the game with a single to center field.

In Altoona's seventh, Gregory Polanco smacked a solo-homer off Bobby Lanigan, giving the Curve a 4-3 lead. Portland almost squandered a golden opportunity in the ninth. Dent led off with a double and Gibson dropped a bunt-single. Thornton fanned Marrero and Garin Cecchini, but J.C. Linares (2-for-6) tied the game with a single to center.

Both teams would score in the 11th inning. Marrero drove in his third run with his second sacrifice fly of the night, but Altoona tied the game on a solo-homer by Alen Hanson off Niesen.

LHP Matt Maloney was solid in relief, tossing two scoreless for the Sea Dogs, who dropped to six games under .500 for the third time this season.

The Sea Dogs and Altoona Curve (Pirates affiliate) meet for the final time in the regular season on Thursday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. RHP Terry Doyle (1-4, 4.14) faces off against RHP David Bromberg (5-9, 3.56).
