Reading Fightin Phils News Release
READING, Pa.---The Reading Fightin Phils and the Binghamton Mets were entrenched in a tie across five innings, but the Fightins were edged by the Mets after they scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning in a 4-3 loss in front of 6,635 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium Wednesday night.
The Fightins took control in the first inning when Zach Collier walked and then scored on a Jim Murphy sacrifice fly. In the next inning, the B-Mets tied the game on Blake Forsythe's solo home run off Fightins starter Brody Colvin to right field.
Both teams dropped a pair of runs to remain tied leaving the third inning. Binghamton loaded the bases with Colvin pitching when Josh Rodriguez and Cory Vaughn singled and Allan Dykstra walked. Darrell Ceciliani plated Rodriguez on a sacrifice fly to pull ahead and Vaughn scored to extend the lead after Maikel Franco made a fielding error on a ball hit by Forsythe.
The Fightins didn't waste any time to wipe the deficit. Troy Hanzawa cracked a base hit on a long fly ball to left field and made his way to second base when Colvin laid down a sacrifice bunt. Albert Cartwright followed with another single. For the third straight game, Collier drove in a run when he fired a double down the right field line to send home Hanzawa. Franco then tied the game when he drove home Cartwright on a sacrifice fly.
Hector Neris relieved Colvin in the fifth inning and kept the Fightins in the game by tossing three perfect innings and striking out four B-Mets hitters to extend his scoreless streak to eight innings.
Fellow right-handed pitcher Kyle Simon was called upon in the eighth inning, but ended up taking the loss after Ceciliani scored on a grounder by Alonzo Harris.
Reading cobbled together a late rally in the ninth, getting two men on base following singles from Hanzawa and Anthony Hewitt. Both men were stranded, though, after Eastern League saves leader Jeff Walters struck out Kelly Dugan and induced Cartwright to pop out to end the game.
Hanzawa and Franco each had two hits to lead the way for the Fightins offense. Franco now has three multi-hit games in his past four outings.
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone will make his return to Baseballtown on a rehab appearance on Thursday night. RHP Greg Peavey (1-1, 1.80 ERA) will start for Binghamton. Tune into Oldies 1340 WRAW-AM or MiLB.TV for the game broadcast with Fightins play-by-play announcer Anthony Oppermann at 6:35 p.m.
Fightins Fillers: Collier is batting .357 (15-for-42) in 12 games this month, the best mark among his teammates. He's drive home four runs and scored seven runs during his breakout month...Kutztown alum Darin Gorski allowed three earned runs in six innings for Binghamton to take home the no-decision.
