New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - After going a career-best eight innings in his last outing on Friday night, Deck McGuire was even better on Wednesday. The righty tossed the first nine-inning complete game of his career, leading the Fisher Cats (58-63) to a 7-2 win over the New Britain Rock Cats (58-65).
Deck's night began in a pitcher's duel with Rock Cats starter B.J. Hermsen (L; 1-9) with each guy tossing three scoreless innings to begin the game. In the fourth, the Fisher Cats broke through. Brad Glenn began the inning with a walk, taking third when Gabe Jacobo doubled. Glenn scored the first run on a groundout by Kevin Nolan to make it 1-0. A Ryan Schimpf bloop single to right plated Jacobo for a two-run advantage.
After the Rock Cats got a home run in the fifth to cut the lead to 2-1, New Hampshire tallied four in the next half-inning. With two outs and reliever Dan Sattler in, John Tolisano ripped a three-run double off the right field wall to push the lead to 5-1. A Kenny Wilson single brought Tolisano home to complete the four-run frame.
New Hampshire added to its lead in the seventh when Adam Loewen pulled into third with a hustling triple to lead off the inning. Glenn followed with a sacrifice fly to right to make it a 7-1 game. New Britain got the run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single with two outs from Reynaldo Rodriguez.
McGuire took it from there, retiring the side in order in the eight for a 1-2-3 inning. He returned in the ninth to finish it off, striking out the final batter of the game on his 108th pitch. He allowed just two earned runs in the 11th nine-inning complete game in franchise history. McGuire surrendered six hits and struck out five without giving up a walk. He has now won three straight outings, giving up just five runs over his last 21 innings of work (2.14 ERA).
Wilson led the Fisher Cats offense with their only multi-hit effort. Glenn reached base twice, scoring twice and driving in his team-leading 69th run. Gabe Jacobo added his third extra-base hit of the series.
The teams now meet for the final time of the year on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Fisher Cats will send Chad Jenkins (0-0, 2.70) to the mound against New Britain's Trevor May (7-8, 4.68). You can follow the game beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats will return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Friday night for a three-game weekend series with the second-place Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees). Tickets are available by visiting www.nhfishercats.com, stopping by the box office at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, or by calling (603) 641-2005.
