AUGUSTA, Ga. - Charleston benefited from great starting pitching and well-timed offense in sweeping Thursday's doubleheader from Augusta, 4-2 and 4-1, in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Charleston has won three straight games in Augusta for the first time since becoming a Yankees affiliate in 2005 in improving to 3-5 in the second half and 34-43 overall, while Augusta has dropped three in a row and sits at 4-4 this half and 45-33 overall. Since ceasing a nine-game losing streak, the RiverDogs three-game win streak is the longest since June 8-11.

Jimmy Paredes staked Charleston to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of game one with a solo home run against Augusta All-Star Jorge Bucardo.

In his return to the SAL, Charleston's starter Brett Marshall motored through the first 3.0 innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth, when he allowed a two-out RBI double to Luke Anders to give Augusta a 2-1 lead.

Paredes squared the contest at 2-2 in the sixth with a bloop RBI single to left field. After a strikeout put two men down, Rob Lyerly knocked a RBI single to left that scored Paredes, who cleverly avoided the tag of Hector Sanchez lunging to the inside portion of home plate for a 3-2 lead. Lyerly then came home on Kyle Higashioka's rolling RBI single to centerfield and the eventual 4-2 final score.

Francisco Gil struck out two batters in the seventh to record his first professional save.

Marshall (1-0) tossed 6.0 innings, permitting two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in collecting his first victory since May 28, 2009. Bucardo (8-3) lost for the first time in 11 starts dating back to April 26, surrendering a season-high four earned runs in 5.2 innings with six punchouts.

Neil Medchill began the game two festivities with a two-run home run in the fourth inning against Augusta's Craig Clark for a 2-0 Charleston lead. The circuit clout was Medchill's third in eight games with the RiverDogs.

Ryan Cavan, the reigning SAL Hitter of the Week, clocked his eighth home run of the year - and fifth in the last seven games - against Josh Romanski in the fifth to trim the lead to 2-1.

The RiverDogs got that run back in the sixth against reliever Craig Whitaker for a 3-1 advantage. Kelvin Castro walked to leadoff, and when Paredes attempted to sacrifice him to second, Whitaker's throw was wide up the right-field line sending Castro to the plate and Paredes to third.

Castro provided an insurance run in seventh with a two-out RBI single off Hector Correa, upping Charleston's lead to 4-1.

Ryan Flannery tossed 2.0 scoreless innings to gain his second save of the series and ninth of the season, which is tied for fifth best in the circuit. Flannery has not allowed an earned run over his last 28 innings.

Romanski (2-2) picked up his first career road victory striking out a career-high tying eight batters and giving up six hits in 5.0 innings. The former University of San Diego Torero also stranded the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings.

Clark (0-1), who was making his first Augusta start since 2008, allowed just two hits in a hard luck loss with three walks and six strikeouts.

Game four of the series is set for Friday at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston planning to pitch right-hander Jose Ramirez (2-4, 3.57 ERA) against Augusta right-hander Andy Reichard (0-0, 3.18 ERA).
