Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC - The Kannapolis Intimidators went into the bottom of the ninth inning with a five-run lead and escaped with an 8-7 victory, snapping their six game losing streak, against the Asheville Tourists on Thursday night.

The Tourists (6-2) led early in the ballgame as they got three runs off starter Joe Serafin in the first inning, but Serafin (7-4) would settle down and work five straight scoreless innings to earn his team-leading seventh win of the year.

In the sixth, the Intimidators had only one hit off Wes Musick but had been retired in order, 15 up and 15 down. Jose Vargas doubled to lead off the inning and was advanced to third on a ground ball by Kevin Dubler and scored on a ground ball by Jake Oester.

The Intimidators (2-6) then got the lead off baserunner on in the seventh off Musick (6-6) before a fly out and a run-scoring double by Ian Gac. Gac was moved to third on a ground ball and with two down, Nick Ciolli grounded the ball to the Tourists second baseman, who booted the ball, scoring Gac to tie the game and setting off a chain of positive events for the Intimidators. Musick then allowed a two-run home run to Vargas, his 10th extra base hit this season in nine games against the Tourists, singles by Dubler and Oester, a double by Daniel Wagner to score one, and then a two-run triple by Mike Richard to cap the scoring in the inning. All told, the Intimidators scored a season-high seven in the inning, six were unearned to Musick who went 6.2 allowing two earned.

Matt Wickswat came on in the seventh and threw two clean innings before allowing the bases loaded in the ninth with an 8-3 advantage. Orlando Santos was called in from the bullpen and struck out the first batter he faced before a fielders choice scored a run and recorded the second out. Avery Barnes then made things interesting with a three-run home run off Santos, but Santos won a long battle with Nolan Arenado that saw a number of two-strike pitches fouled off but ended in a called strike on the inside corner to end the game.

Richard records his first two-hit night as a member of the Intimidators in the victory. The Intimidators scored eight runs on ten hits one day after scoring one run on 11 hits.

The Intimidators look to make it a great start to the month of July as we enter Fourth of July Weekend with two more games in the series. Game four will see Andre Rienzo take on Nick Schnaitmann in a 7:05 pm contest at McCormick Field.
