Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats (3-5/45-33) stepped on the pedal late to pull away from the Greenville Drive with a 7-3 win Thursday night at Fluor Field.
The Gnats broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth when SS Wilfredo Tovar singled home 1B Travis Ozga who had begun the inning with a single of his own. Ozga was 4-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Ozga is now hitting .471 (8 H/17 AB) in his first six games as a Gnat.
Savannah added two in the top of the sixth inning on a 3B Jefry Marte two-run home run to push their lead to 4-1. It was Marte's fourth home run of the year.
The Drive (6-2/42-36) picked up a run back in the bottom of the sixth against Gnats' starter Collin McHugh. McHugh held the Drive to two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings to pick up his first win since April 21. He walked two and struck out seven, tying a personal season-best.
The Gnats kept adding runs late. In the eighth, CF RJ Harris led off with a solo home run, his first as a Gnat. With two outs in the inning, doubles from RF Cesar Puello and 1B Travis Ozga added another run to make it 6-2 Savannah.
Guillaume Leduc made his Savannah debut in the bottom of the eighth inning and yielded a run on two hits and a walk. The 6'4" righty had made one appearance this year with Brooklyn in the New York-Penn League.
The Gnats send LHP Darin Gorski (2-2, 2.94) to the mound Friday night to take on RHP Kendal Volz (4-2, 3.60) in game four of the five-game series. The broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 7 pm.
