Legends Defeat 'Dads, 6-3

HICKORY, NC - The Lexington Legends scored four runs in the fifth inning en route to a 6-3 win against the Hickory Crawdads, before 2,626 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday night.
Hickory (4-4, 44-34) nabbed an early run in the first against Legends starter RHP Juan Minaya. 2B Travis Adair led off the inning with a double to left-center field. After 3B Matt West singled Adair over to third, DH Cristian Santana smacked a single to center to plate Adair and put the 'Dads up 1-0.
Lexington (4-4, 39-39) tied the game in the top of the second with an unearned run against Crawdads starter LHP Robbie Ross (8-7, 2.59 ERA). With the bases loaded and none out, Ross was able to induce a double play from CF Brian Kemp, but 3B Jonathan Meyer scored on the play to knot the game up, 1-1.
The Legends pulled ahead, 2-1, with a run in the fourth and added four more (only three earned) in the top of the fifth to further extend their lead, 6-1. With RF J.D. Martinez on third and two outs, Lexington strung together three straight hits, compounded by an error by 1B Ed Koncel and another single to plate the final run against Ross before the last out was recorded by reliever RHP Johnny Gunter, making his Crawdads debut.
The Crawdads rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within three runs. SS Edwin Garcia led the inning off with a walk and Adair followed with a single to put runners at first and second. After CF Joe Bonadonna bunted the runners to second and third, a wild pitch by Minaya allowed Garcia to race in from third and score. West then laced a double to bring in Adair to account for the final run in the eventual 6-3 win for Lexington.
Ross allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits and a walk while fanning two in 4.1 innings to take the loss. Gunter pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in his Hickory debut. RHP Johan Yan followed with two scoreless frames and LHP Joseph Ortiz dealt the final shutout ninth. RHP Jose Trinidad (5-2, 2.79 ERA) picked up the win in relief for Lexington with RHP Kirk Clark recording his 15th save.
