Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - The Charleston RiverDogs picked up a doubleheader sweep of the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night by a score of 4-2 in the opener and 4-1 in the nightcap from Lake Olmstead Stadium.

In the opener, the RiverDogs took a fourth inning lead on a solo home run from Jimmy Paredes. With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Luke Anders came through with a two-run double to hand the lead right back to Augusta. The RBI double was part of a two-hit night for Anders.

The wheels fell off for Jorge Bucardo and the GreenJackets in the sixth inning of game one as Charleston sent seven men to the plate and took advantage of an error, a walk and three hits to score three times and claim the lead for good. RBI singles from Paredes, Rob Lyerly and Kyle Higashioka gave the RiverDogs a 4-2 lead they wouldn't lose.

Brett Marshall (1-0) was making his first start with the RiverDogs since Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last August. Marshall allowed two runs on four hits with two walks in six solid innings, striking out six. Bucardo (8-3) lost for the first time since April 26th and allowed four runs on five hits over 5.2 innings.

The nightcap saw a few similarities to the opener as the RiverDogs claimed their first doubleheader sweep of the season with a 4-1 win. Much like in the opener, it was a fourth inning home run that broke the ice for Charleston. Neil Medchill's two-run blast put the Dogs up 2-0 in the fourth. Ryan Cavan answered with a solo home run - his fifth home run in the second half and eighth of the season - to cut the lead to one.

One, however, is as close as Augusta would come in game two. Charleston got an unearned run in the sixth when GreenJackets reliever Craig Whitaker threw a sacrifice bunt attempt up the right field line to score an insurance run all the way from first. With two outs in the seventh, Kelvin Castro singled home another run to put the RiverDogs up by three.

Craig Clark (0-1) threw five innings in his first start in Augusta since 2008. He allowed two runs on two hits with three walks while striking out six. Josh Romanski (2-2) struck out a career-high eight in five innings while allowing one run on six hits and two walks.

Game two was a story of blown chances for the GreenJackets, stranding nine runners on the basepaths and twice leaving the bases full. In addition, Augusta pitching handed the RiverDogs golden opportunities all night long as three pitchers combined to walk seven Charleston hitters.

The GreenJackets look to snap their three-game losing skid with Andy Reichard (0-0, 3.18) on the hill to face Michael Solbach (1-2, 3.33) on Friday night. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a free golf visor and the GreenJackets will wear special Margaritaville-themed jerseys on Jimmy Buffet Night. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
