Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Brett Newsome's two-run double in the ninth was the difference, as the Hagerstown Suns (Nationals) beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 6-4 Thursday night.
Jordan Ellis (3-3) started the ninth by hitting Justin Bloxom with a slider. One out later, Destin Hood hit a sharp grounder to third that Adam Buschini couldn't handle, putting runners on first and second for Newsome. The designated hitter delivered with a double to left center that put the Suns up for good 6-4.
Hagerstown (3-5) took the lead in the first for the third straight game. Jeff Kobernus led off with a single, and came around to score on an error by Jonathan Singleton to make it 1-0.
Lakewood (5-2) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Jonathan Villar led off with a triple, and came home on a groundout by Leandro Castro. It was Castro's 50th RBI of the season.
The BlueClaws jumped ahead in the sixth on a bizarre play. James started the inning with a single, then took second despite being picked off first thanks to an error by Francisco Soriano, who dropped the ball before he could get a tag down. James then stole third, and scored on an errant throw by Suns starter Graham Hicks to put the Claws up 2-1.
Hagerstown came back in the seventh to regain the lead, scoring three runs to jump ahead 4-2. Villar answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run blast to right to tie the game at four.
Patrick Arnold (2-2) threw two hitless innings of relief for the win.
Justin Beal made his first appearance out of the Lakewood bullpen after being recalled from Williamsport. He let up two runs in an inning of work.
Friday night at 7:05 pm LHP Matt Way (7-4, 3.35) faces Suns LHP Josh Smoker (1-8, 6.88).
