DeRatt, Sanders Promoted to Modesto; Martinez Joins Tourists; Vargas Activated

The Colorado Rockies have promoted third baseman Joe Sanders and pitcher Alan DeRatt from the Asheville Tourists to the Modesto Nuts of the California League. Sanders and DeRatt played for the Southern Division in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. An Auburn product, Sanders hit .267 with the Tourists and ranked second on the club with nine home runs and 40 RBIs. DeRatt, who played collegiately at UNC Asheville, was 3-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 19 appearances with the Tourists this season.

Taking the places of Sanders and DeRatt on the Asheville roster are shortstop Carlos Martinez and pitcher Jonathan Vargas. Martinez played in 91 games with the Tourists in 2009 and batted .197. Vargas has been on the Tourists' inactive list; he is 1-6 with a 6.94 ERA in 10 starts this season.

The Tourists will conclude the current homestand with fireworks shows following Friday and Saturday night games against Kannapolis, with both contests beginning at 7:05 p.m. After a four-game road trip to Charleston, S.C., Asheville returns to McCormick Field on Thursday, July 8, to open a five-game series with Savannah.
