Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Nashville, Tenn. - The Oklahoma City Dodgers scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to break open a tie game and went on to win, 10-7, over the Nashville Sounds Saturday night at First Tennessee Park.
The Dodgers had a lead three separate times through the first seven innings, but the Sounds kept coming back, putting the score at 5-5 entering the eighth inning. OKC had the bases loaded with one out and took the lead when Nashville reliever Miguel Del Pozo committed a balk.
Following a strikeout, the Sounds made a pitching change and replaced Del Pozo with Reed Garrett, but each of the next five Dodgers hitters reached base with two outs. Cameron Perkins lined a two-run single to give the Dodgers some breathing room at 8-5. DJ Peters followed with a single off Garrett's foot, and Perkins scored when Garrett committed a throwing error on the play. Shane Peterson tallied the fifth run of the inning with a RBI double.
The Dodgers (33-47) still led, 10-5, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. As was the case all evening, the Sounds (35-46) fought back. Eli White hit a two-run double, and Patrick Wisdom was then hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate.
The Dodgers were forced to call upon Kevin Quackenbush out of the bullpen, and the all-star reliever struck out Scott Heineman to end the game and earn his fourth save.
Throughout Saturday's contest the teams combined for 17 runs, 23 hits, 14 walks, 23 strikeouts and four wild pitches in a game that lasted three hours, 56 minutes. In the end, the Dodgers picked up their 11th win in their last 13 road games.
Three pitches into the game, the Dodgers took the lead. Facing a 2-0 count, Connor Joe sent a line drive home run to left field, marking the second straight night he went deep in the first inning.
However, the Dodgers missed out on a chance to extend the lead. Three straight batters reached base with two outs to load the bases, but Nashville pitcher Austin Bibens-Dirkx struck out Drew Jackson to keep OKC only ahead by one run.
Jon Kemmer connected on the team's second homer of the night with a line drive to center field in the third inning, pushing the lead to 2-0.
Dodgers starting pitcher Mitchell White retired all six batters over the first two innings, with five via strikeout. But things began to turn in the third inning following a leadoff walk. Three of the next four batters also reached base, including a RBI single by Zack Granite. Following a walk to load the bases with one out, White reached his pitch limit and left the game. Daniel Corcino relieved White and escaped the inning with a lineout and strikeout to keep the lead in hand.
However, Corcino wasn't as fortunate in the fourth inning. Heineman led off the inning with a fly ball to right field Peterson had trouble locating in the lights, resulting in a triple. Andy Ibáñez followed with a RBI double, and Christian Lopes knocked a RBI single to give the Sounds their first lead at 3-2.
The Dodgers quickly regained the lead in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Perkins, who finished with a season-high four RBI. The Sounds pulled even once again in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Lopes.
Each team scored in the seventh inning on a wild pitch.
Corcino (5-3) recorded the majority of the outs for OKC and earned the win. He allowed four runs and six hits, with two walks and four strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Del Pozo (2-2) was charged with the loss.
The Dodgers continue their series in Nashville at 6:15 p.m. Sunday evening. Live radio coverage of each game begins 15 minutes before first pitch on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com and through the free iHeartRadio or MiLB First Pitch apps.
