Dodgers Edged in Extras in Omaha

Papillion, Neb. - Jack Lopez hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning, sending the Omaha Storm Chasers to a 1-0 win over the Oklahoma City Dodgers Tuesday night at Werner Park.

The teams combined for just one run and 13 hits on the night, with only one hit going for extra bases. They also went a combined 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

The game was scoreless after nine innings, and the top of the 10th inning, all three Dodgers batters were retired by Jake Newberry. Henry Ramos, who began the inning at second base as the designated runner, never advanced past second base.

In the home half of the inning, Humberto Arteaga led off with a groundout to first base, advancing the designated runner Donnie Dewees to third base. Lopez came up next and hit a fly ball to shallow right field that was caught slightly in foul territory by Alex Verdugo. Dewees tagged and headed home, and Verdugo's throw sailed to the screen behind home plate on the game-ending play.

As a result, the Dodgers (63-55) were shut out for the second time in four games, as well as the seventh time this season. It was also the team's sixth walk-off loss of the season.

Dodgers starting pitcher Daniel Corcino lasted seven innings for a second consecutive start and did not allow a run, holding the Storm Chasers to two singles. He allowed three walks to go along with four strikeouts and only had one runner advance as far as third base.

In his last two starts, Corcino has given up one run and six hits over 14 innings, but he has had to settle for a no decision each time.

The Storm Chasers (56-64) only threatened once against Corcino, and it was in the bottom of the fifth inning. Elier Hernandez walked with one out and Dewees followed with a single to put runners at the corners. But Corcino got Aretaga to fly out to shallow center field and then struck out Lopez to end the inning.

On the other side, the Dodgers were tied up by Omaha starting pitcher Jonathan Dziedzic through six innings. Although they tallied seven hits against Dziedzic, he held OKC 1-for-10 with runners on base and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The Dodgers left seven runners on base while Dziedzic was in the game, with four stranded in scoring position.

The team's offensive woes continued after Dziedzic left the game. OKC was held hitless after the fifth inning and went 0-for-the-last-17. For the game, the Dodgers went 1-for-15 with runners on base and 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Storm Chasers loaded the bases with one out following three hits, including two infield singles. Brian Schlitter then struck out Frank Schwindel, keeping the bases loaded with two outs. Cam Gallagher came up next, and with the count full, he sent a deep drive to left field that was caught right in front of the wall by Edwin RÃ-os.

Newberry (3-0) earned the win for Omaha after keeping the Dodgers off the board it he 10th inning. He and fellow reliever Richard Lovelady combined to pitch four scoreless and hitless innings.

Michael Johnson (0-1) was charged with the loss, despite allowing one hit and one unearned run in 1.2 innings.
