Diaz Does It All in Baby Cakes' Win

June 20, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Isan Diaz hit two of the Baby Cakes' four home runs and made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch to begin a game-ending double play as New Orleans defeated the Nashville Sounds, 6-2 on Thursday night.

Diaz cranked his 15th home run of the campaign in the fifth inning and added his 16th two innings later, giving him his first multi-homer game since 2016. It was his first two long balls since June 9, but in 27 games since May 22, the Baby Cakes' second baseman has clubbed 11 homers.

Magneuris Sierra wasted no time getting the scoring started by driving his first Triple-A home run of the season into the right field pool leading off the bottom of the first.

Diaz walked with two outs in the third and came all the way around to score on a broken-bat triple into the right field corner by Yangervis Solarte, doubling the New Orleans advantage.

Deven Marrero capped the Baby Cakes' third game of four home runs this season with a solo blast in the eighth, his 10th of the year.

That was more than enough offense for Beggs (6-3), who limited Nashville to one hit over the first five innings. Beggs had entered with a 7.16 ERA in six home starts but kept the Sounds off balance, finishing with six strikeouts to earn his sixth victory.

Kyle Keller finished off the final two innings, and got the last two outs on Diaz's running grab of Patrick Wisdom's pop up into shallow right-center which appeared as though it would find green grass. Diaz spun around to first to double off Tyler Pill and end the game.

Seth Maness (4-2) took the loss after scattering nine hits and five runs - four earned - across seven innings. It was his first defeat since his season debut on May 2, spanning nine starts.

New Orleans won for the sixth time in eight games and moved nine games above the .500 mark for the first time since August 28, 2012.

The teams continue the five-game series on Friday at 7 p.m., Star Wars Night at the Shrine.
