LOWELL, Mass. - A go-ahead goal by Olli Malmivaara with 3:43 left in regulation was not enough to hold off the Springfield Falcons, who came back to defeat the Lowell Devils, 3-2 in the shootout.
With the score tied 1-1 in the waning minutes of the third period, the Devils received a power play when Tim Sestito was whistled for hooking at 14:50. Malmivaara was able to sneak down from the blueline to accept Noah Clarke's centering pass and put it inside the near post for his fourth goal of the season.
Lowell's lead lasted only 45 seconds as a scramble in front of Frank Doyle resulted in the puck popping out to Jean-Francois Jacques, who sent over the pack and into the back of the net.
The two teams headed through a scoreless overtime and into the shootout. There, Springfield was able to convert on their first three chances, while Jeff Deslauriers was a perfect 3-for-3 against the Lowell shooters.
The Falcons thought they gone up 1-0 with 2:23 left until the intermission, but the goal was disallowed as Viacheslva Trukhno used his skate to kick the puck across the goal line.
Instead it was the Devils who broke the scoreless tie at 7:52 of the second period as Trevor Kell continued his stellar AHL debut. With his team skating on a man-advantage, Kell deflected Clarke's slapshot down under the glove of Deslauriers. The goal extended Kell's point-streak over his first five AHL games (2g, 4a). Springfield equaled Lowell at one later in the period on a power play of their own. From behind the net, Jacques found Rob Schremp on the fa! r circle for a snapshot that went into the top corner.
Doyle finished with 31 saves through 65 minutes of hockey, while Lowell's power play went 2-for-4 on the power play.
Lowell completes the weekend on Sunday, January 13 at 4:05 p.m. versus the Portland Pirates.
