Worcester Sharks News Release
PROVIDENCE, RI - Behind strong goaltending by Dimitri Patzold and Devin Setoguchi's first AHL goal, the Worcester Sharks defeated the Providence Bruins for the second-consecutive game, 3-0, Friday evening at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI. The Sharks rode the momentum from Saturday's thrilling shootout win by jumping out to the quick 2-0 lead and handing the first-place Bruins only their sixth regulation loss of the season.
Patzold finished the night with 25 saves, recording the first-shutout in franchise history, and his fifth career AHL shutout.
Worcester improves to 3-1-0-1 against the Bruins this season. It marks only the second two-game losing streak suffered by the Bruins this season.
The Sharks jumped out of the gate with one of their strongest periods of the season. After numerous opportunities in the offensive zone, they capitalized at 7:09 of the first, giving Worcester the all-important first goal. It marked the eighth time in the last nine contests that the Sharks have lit the lamp first. Lukas Kaspar sent a shot towards the net from the top of the left faceoff circle. Riley Armstrong redirected the rising puck by Providence goaltender Tuukka Rask for his eighth goal of the season. Tom Cavanaugh was also credited with an assist on the play.
Worcester continued to keep up the pressure. They upped their lead to 2-0 at 16:01 when Setoguchi scored his first-career AHL goal, assisted by Dan Spang. Spang made an outlet pass from the Sharks' defensive zone to a streaking Setoguchi. He skated in all alone on the left wing side and beat Rask with a perfectly placed shot to the top right corner of the net.
Providence nearly cut the lead to one with under two minutes remaining in the first. The Sharks turned the puck over in front of Patzold, but Martin Karsums was denied by Patzold, who made the strong save.
The Bruins came out of the locker room with an extra jump in their step, looking to cut into the Sharks' advantage. They did not capitalize on their first four shots and Worcester made them pay. At 2:35, Ashton Rome made a nifty pass from behind the net to former Bruin Dennis Packard. Packard's shot from the left faceoff circle beat Rask to the far post for the 3-0 lead. It was Packard's fifth goal of the season.
At 3:55 of the second, Rask was pulled in favor of Jordan Sigalet after allowing three goals on 11 shots.
T. J. Trevelyan nearly got Providence on the board with 7:16 remaining in the first period, but Patzold made a quick left pad save.
After 15 minutes of back-and-forth action in the third with neither team lighting the lamp, Patzold continued to come up with clutch saves. With 4:30 remaining in the game, the Bruins attempted a wraparound, but Patzold moved quickly from his left to his right to deflect the puck away from the right post.
The Sharks head to Albany tomorrow night before wrapping up the trip with a Wednesday evening affair in Hartford. Lukas Kaspar collector's cards will be given away to the first 3,000 fans when the Sharks return to the DCU Center to take on the Portland Pirates at 7:05 pm on Friday, January 18th. The Sharks will feature their black alternate jerseys for another Black Friday, and free massages will be available on the concourse courtesy of the Salter School of Massage Therapy.
