Devils Hit The Road One Last Time
March 24, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Devils took a difficult split of the past weekend's set and now look towards finishing out their road slate. Losses to Wheeling and Reading bookended a 7-2 win over Dayton; a victory which has kept their season alive. Now Trenton heads to Elmira, Reading, and Johnstown for the final times this regular season. There are six games left in the campaign and the Devils are still in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the North Division. Trenton stands in sixth place in the North with a record of 25-34-7.
CLIPPED BY THE NAILERS: Trenton rode a three-game winning streak into Sovereign Bank Arena on Thursday night but had that run stopped by a 1-0 Wheeling win. The Devils pounded 38 shots onto the Nailers' net, and allowed just 21 attempts in the opposite direction. However, Curtis Darling continued his strong play against Trenton by closing the Devils down for his second shutout of the season. Matt Byrnes scored the lone goal of the game by bouncing a centering pass off of traffic in the slot and past Devils goaltender Jason Smith in the first period.
DAYTON DROPPED: The Devils had yet another outstanding performance against the Bombers, scoring a season-high seven goals in a 7-2 romp at home. Jim Henkel had a four point night (2g, 2a) and was one of seven Devils to have a multi-point affair. Trenton knocked in four power play goals while keeping Dayton to a 1/6 mark on its own chances. Although Trenton was outshot 39-35, Jason Smith made 37 saves for his fourth win in five contests.
ROYALS REIGN: With a six-game road winning streak on the line, Trenton hoped to carry the day at the Sovereign Center against the Royals on Saturday. But after taking an early 1-0 lead, courtesy of Jim Henkel, the Devils fell behind and would find themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 score in Pennsylvania. Two Reading goals in the second and one in the third foiled Trenton's night. The Devils went 0/7 on the power play but had no fewer than three shots ring off the pipes against rookie netminder John Murray.
QUICK HITS: Jim Henkel has five points (3g, 2a) in his last two games... Henkel now has two four-point nights this season; the last time came on 1/19 vs. DAY... Tony Zancanaro has nine points (5g, 4a) in the last five contests, including two game-winning goals... Jason Smith has started in a team season-high nine straight contests for Trenton... Trenton scored a season-high seven goals against Dayton on Friday... Trenton went 4/6 on the power play in that contest... The Devils are 23-9-1-2 if they hold a lead at any time before the final result... Over the last ten games the Devils have outshot their opponents 383-299.
