Derek Army Named to ECHL All-Rookie Team
April 8, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are excited to announce that forward Derek Army has been selected to the 2014-15 ECHL All-Rookie Team.
Army, 23, got a brief taste of ECHL hockey in four regular season games and three playoff contests last spring, allowing himself to launch onto the scene during his rookie campaign. While it took Derek a few games to start producing points, he really got going at the end of November and start of December, picking up six goals and 13 points in eleven December contests. That stellar play continued into January, when he accumulated eight goals and 16 points in 14 tilts, including a Gordie Howe Hat Trick on the 31st at Kalamazoo. March also saw stellar numbers for the North Kingstown, RI native, as he put himself into the conversation for the team's leading scorer with 18 points in 14 games. Part of Army's magnificent March was a four-game goal scoring streak, which tied the team's season-high.
Derek's 27 goals are by far the most on Wheeling's 2014-15 roster, as he currently leads that category by nine over Riley Brace and Zack Torquato. His league rank among rookies in that category is fourth, while his 61 points are second on the Nailers and second among ECHL rookies. Army leads both the team and the rookies with 245 shots, and his four game winning goals are tied for the most on the club and tied for fourth among first year players. The former Providence College Friar has recorded multiple points on 15 different occasions, which trails Brace by one for the top spot on the team.
Derek Army becomes the 13th player in team history to be named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team. The previous 12 were: Kelli Corpse (1995-96), Zenon Konopka (2002-03), Nick Boucher (2003-04), Sean Collins (2005-06), Andy Franck (2005-06), Bryan Ewing (2008-09), Mitch Ganzak (2008-09), Jordan Morrison (2008-09), Elgin Reid (2008-09), Ben Street (2010-11), Chris Barton (2011-12), and Andrew Hotham (2011-12). Wheeling has now had at least one representative on either the All-ECHL First Team, All-ECHL Second Team, or ECHL All-Rookie Team in six of the past seven seasons.
Army and the Nailers will continue to make their push toward the Kelly Cup Playoffs on Wednesday night at 7:30 in Reading, before returning home on Friday night at 7:35 against Elmira.
