PREVIEW: The Delmarva Shorebirds continue a two city tour over the next two days with their first trip to Greensboro, North Carolina. The Grasshoppers are the Class A Affiliate of the Miami Marlins. Since opening the season with a 4-6 mark and losing two of the first three series on the campaign, the Shorebirds have a series record of 7-1-1 over their last nine sets, going 21-12 over that stretch. Greensboro is currently the hottest team in the South Atlantic League though - since losing on May 15th at Delmarva, 3-2, the 'Hoppers have won eight in a row and just swept a four game series against Hagerstown to knock them off the top of the Northern Division Standings.
TODAY'S OPPONENT: Left-hander Brett Lilek takes the hill for the Grasshoppers in the second game of the series. Lilek didn't receive a decision in his first start against Delmarva 11 days ago. He went three innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Lilek was Miami's second round pick last summer after pitching three seasons at Arizona State where he went 10-8 with a 3.05 ERA. Tonight marks his 16th professional appearance and his 15th career start.
LAST GAME QUICK HITS: After five terrific consecutive outings by Shorebirds pitching, the 'Birds fell 9-2 to Greensboro last night. Francisco Jimenez issued two walks and hit a batter in the first inning when Maxx Tissenbaum launched a grand slam to right field to give the 'Hoppers an early edge. Josh Naylor had his first two homer game as a pro with a two-run shot and a solo homer in the fifth and seventh. Delmarva hit two home runs as well - Drew Turbin lifted his first of the season out to right field in the eighth inning, followed shortly thereafter by Yermin Mercedes' third trip around the bags. Mercedes moonshot went an estimated 423 feet to left-center field.
