Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Luis Cedeno and Nestor Cortes were brilliant, combining for nine shutout innings, as the Charleston RiverDogs clinched the three-game series with a 6-0 win over the West Virginia Power on Tuesday night in front of 2,720 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Cedeno (1-1) started the ballgame with six scoreless frames while allowing just a hit before Cortes finished out the final three innings of the combined shutout effort.
The RiverDogs (29-15) put Cedeno in line for the win early with Connor Spencer driving in a run on a bloop single to left that made it 1-0 RiverDogs. Kyle Holder scored on the play after leading off the frame with a double down the left field line to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, the longest streak for any RiverDogs hitter this season.
Cedeno had some command issues in the early goings, issuing a pair of walks, a hit by pitch, and a wild pitch over his six innings of work, but did not allow a hit through the first four frames. West Virginia right fielder Ryan Nagle led off the sixth inning with a hard hit ground ball that was fielded by shortstop Hoy Jun Park, who made a desperation throw from one knee that Nagle just beat out on a bang-bang play to end the no-hit bid.
The RiverDogs provided some insurance in the seventh as a Power error allowed the second RiverDogs run of the ballgame to cross the plate. With one out, Charleston right fielder Nathan Mikolas stroked a single to right and stole second, before a ground ball off the bat of Eduardo Navas passed gently under the glove of Carlos Munoz for an error that doubled the RiverDogs lead.
Charleston made it a comfortable ninth inning with a four spot put up in the bottom of the ninth. A double by Spencer followed by three straight walks, including a bases loaded free pass issued to Kendall Coleman, would make it 3-0. Navas then ripped a bases clearing double down the right field line to push the lead to 6-0.
The RiverDogs remain in first place in the Southern Division, holding the best record in the South Atlantic League with a 29-15 mark.
