Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
BOWIE, MD - After a lengthy rain-delay, the Richmond Flying Squirrels (24-28) dropped their fourth straight contest, falling to the Bowie Baysox (26-28), 3-2, on Wednesday night at Prince George's Stadium. The Baysox also collected the series win with the victory, dropping the Squirrels to 1-5 on their current road-trip and 7-18 overall on the road.
After three scoreless innings, the Squirrels used some sloppy defense from the Baysox to break on top against left-hander Rick Zagone in the fourth inning. Drew Biery sparked the Squirrels with a one-out single. It marked the first Double-A hit for Biery, and also the first hit of the evening for the Squirrels. Jose Flores followed and sent ground ball to Greg Miclat at second base. What should have been a double-play ball was misplayed by Miclat and the Squirrels had two aboard. Sharlon Schoop followed and sent another chance to Miclat. This time, shortstop Pedro Florimon dropped a flip from Miclat, and everyone was safe on the error to load the bases with one out. Aaron Lowenstein lined a sacrifice-fly to center field to plate Biery and give Richmond a 1-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Squirrels' left-hander Clayton Tanner was perfect through four innings, retiring the first 12 batters that he faced. That run hit 13 before Ronnie Welty singled with one out in the fifth inning. L.J. Hoes then sent a hard ground ball to third base that Schoop couldn't handle. The error put two aboard with one out. Tanner committed a balk that moved the runners to second and third. Florimon then redeemed himself for his error with a double off the base of the wall in center field that scored both runners for a 2-1 Bowie lead.
Richmond tied it back up in the sixth when Flores tripled into the right-field corner with one out. A batter later, Zagone uncorked a wild-pitch, allowing Flores in to tie the game, 2-2.
Neither starter factored in the decision as both left after six innings. Each allowed two runs - one earned. Zagone allowed two hits, while Tanner permitted three.
The Baysox reclaimed the lead against right-hander Osiris Matos in the seventh inning. Florimon recorded a lead-off single and advanced to second base when catcher's interference was called on Aaron Lowenstein with two outs. Greg Miclat delivered a two-out RBI single to plate Florimon for a 3-2 advantage. The run allowed snapped Matos' personal run of 18 consecutive scoreless innings.
Right-hander Jose Diaz closed the ballgame with a perfect ninth inning, earning his league-leading 17th save of the season. It also marked the sixth save of the season for Diaz against the Squirrels as Bowie improved to 10-4 against Richmond.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Prince George's Stadium on Thursday night. LHP Ryan Verdugo () will make the start for Richmond against RHP Zach Clark () for the Baysox.
