Altoona Curve News Release
TRENTON, N.J. - Altoona led early on Wednesday morning in Trenton but the Thunder tied the game on two different occasions and took the lead for good in the sixth en route to a, 7-3, win at Waterfront Park. With the game tied at two entering the bottom of the sixth, Trenton chased starter Aaron Thompson (2-5) and scored four times to take the lead for good.
Altoona actually scored first in the game and led at two different points in the game. Jordy Mercer singled in Quincy Latimore with two down in the first to place the Curve in front, 1-0. After Trenton tied it in the bottom half of the inning, Altoona reclaimed the lead in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Tony Sanchez.
The lead would last until the fifth when Trenton tied it on an Addison Maruszak sacrifice fly to make it 2-2. In the sixth, Jose Pirela singled with one down, stole second and came around to score the go-ahead on an Austin Romine single into left field. The single by Romine would chase Thompson from the game after 5.1 innings.
Reliever Matt McSwain was called upon out of the bullpen and the first batter he faced in Brad Suttle reached on a fielding error by Matt Curry at first. Cody Johnson came to the plate next and hit a three-run homer to right center and Trenton went out in front, 6-2. Thompson finished 5.1 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits with three strikeouts.
The Curve pulled within three again in the seventh when Curry singled in Brad Chalk to make it 6-3 with two away. Trenton added another run off McSwain in the bottom of the seventh to once again go up by four.
Altoona went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position on Wednesday and stranded nine men on the bases. Chalk finished the game 3-for-5 to lead the team while Curry, Jeremy Farrell and Latimore all had two-hit games.
