Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels committed a season-high five errors en route to a 7-4 loss to the Peoria Chiefs at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids. Those errors led to four unearned runs as the Chiefs roughed up starter Orangel Arenas (0-2) for five runs (two earned) with three coming in the first inning.
Justin Bour did most of the damage for the Chiefs, going 2-4 with two doubles and 5 RBI. Peoria starter Trey McNutt (1-0) held the Kernels to a run on four hits over six innings for the win and Jordan Latham squelched a Kernel rally in the ninth for his fourth save.
Mike Trout went 3-4 with a triple tonight for the Kernels to raise his seasons average to .361 and extend his hitting streak to six games. Jean Segura, Michael Wing and Luis Jimenez each added an RBI.
The Kernels trailed 7-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth as Matt Long and Jean Segura both drew walks. After a pop out, a wild pitch allowed both runners to move up and another wild pitch from Peoria reliever Corey Martin allowed Long to score. Luis Jimenez drove in the second run on a ground out to short. With two outs, Randal Grichuk doubled and scored on Wing's single to make the score 7-4. Latham came on to pitch to Casey Haerther, who popped to short to end the game.
