Four-Run Lead Evaporates In Peoria
April 17, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Peoria, IL (April 17, 2010) - The explosiveness of the Burlington Bees offense was again on display on Saturday as the offense capitalized on three errors for a five-run third inning. The Peoria Chiefs were just as willing to put up big numbers, however, in posting a six-run fourth on the way to a 7-6 win in their home opener.
The Bees' opportunity came with two outs in the third, as Hilton Richardson reached base on a fielding error by Peoria starting pitcher Su-Min Jung (W, 2-0). The next four Bees hitters reached base, including Carlo Testa on a two- run single that saw him come around to score on the same play after a pair of Peoria errors, and the Bees led 5-1.
Bees starter Nick Wooley (L, 0-1) was charged with holding the lead, but in the bottom of the fourth, the Peoria bats woke up in a big way. Four singles and a pair of two-run triples by Matt Cerda and Richard Jones contributed to a six- run inning for the Chiefs, and the home club had a lead it would not relinquish.
Joey Lewis belted his third home run of the season in the top of the sixth to pull the Bees within one, but they were unable to score again. In his first appearance with the Chiefs, left-hander James Leverton (S, 1) pitched two scoreless innings to clinch the victory.
Bryan Paukovits, getting the nod for the second half of the tandem start, tossed four shutout innings in relief of Wooley to keep the game within reach. The right-hander struck out four, did not walk a batter, and allowed only one hit.
Lewis finished 2-for-4 with six total bases and two RBI, while Testa also notched a multi-hit game. Gerard Hall was on base three times with a double and two walks.
The Bees take on the Chiefs again at O'Brien Field tomorrow afternoon at 4:00. Listen in as Nick Devlin brings you the Casebine Community Credit Union Pregame Show starting at 3:40 on News Radio 1490 KBUR.
