Losing Streak Over, Hawks Post First W in 2010

April 17, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Dayton, OH - The South Bend Silver Hawks came up with clutch hits and great pitching to snap a season-long nine game losing streak, defeating the Dayton Dragons 6-3 on Saturday night for the first victory of 2010.

After struggling all season with runners in scoring position, the Silver Hawks were able to come through with a clutch hit in the top of the first against Dayton starter Jacob Johnson (ND) to set the tone. Chris Owings started the rally with a one out double and Bobby Borchering followed with a RBI double for the 1-0 lead. The first five hits of the year for Borchering were all doubles, before he added a single later in the game.

Dayton answered against South Bend starter Dan Taylor (ND) in the bottom of the second. Frank Pfister and Shane Carlson had back-to-back singles to start the inning, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. Efrain Contreras followed with a grounder to third that Borchering couldn't handle, with a run scoring on the error to tie the game.

The Dragons took their first lead in the third when Byron Wiley launched a 0-2 pitch over the wall in right field for his third homer of the season. Dayton added a RBI single from Kevin Coddington in the fifth to extend their lead to 3-1.

South Bend loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the sixth inning, but were only able to get one run out of the rally. Borchering, David Nick, and Matt Davidson all singled to load them up, and Bobby Stone had a crucial sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. Reliever Justin Walker (LP, 0-2) got a double play from Alberto Diaz to end the threat.

The seventh inning is when the Silver Hawks finally broke through with the big inning they've been looking for all season. South Bend scored four runs on four hits to take a 6-3 lead. Owings had a two-run triple, with Borchering and Davidson each adding RBI doubles in the biggest Hawks rally of the season. An error in the inning caused two of the runs to be unearned, but the damage was done with the Hawks taking a three run lead to the final few innings.

The Silver Hawks bullpen was spectacular Saturday night, pitching 4.0 scoreless innings. Chris Odegaard (WP, 1-0) allowed just one hit in the sixth and seventh combined for the win, with Bradin Hagens pitching a 1-2-3 eighth. Yonata Ortega (SV, 1) got the final three outs for his first save of the year.

The Silver Hawks and Dragons continue the three game series with game two Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. Left-hander Mike Belfiore (0-1, 4.70 ERA) starts for South Bend against Dayton RHP Josh Ravin (0-0, 2.08 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
