Dayton Gems: Weekend Review

February 21, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release

DAYTON, OH - This past weekend was not ideal for the Dayton Gems. After starting the weekend off with an exciting 2-1 victory over Quad City Thursday, the Gems dropped two road games to Fort Wayne.

The Gems have now lost to the Komets six straight times, and have been shutout twice during that same stretch.

The Gems (23-21-4) are now eighth in the Turner Conference standings.

Gems vs. Quad City, 2-1 win

For Chris Lipsett, Dayton's 2-1 win over Quad City was one that he won't likely forget.

After missing two months because of an injury, Lipsett recorded his first goal since Dec. 4 in stylish form.

With the game tied midway through the third period, Matthew Larke stole the puck for the Gems and passed it up the ice to Lipsett. When Lipsett went one-on-one with the Mallards' goaltender, he scored the game winning goal for the Gems.

Dayton goaltender Derek MacIntyre also had a night to remember.

Just two days after fellow goalie Jeff Jakaitis was promoted to the AHL's Worcester Sharks, MacIntyre recorded 45 saves for the Gems and earned his first win since New Year's Eve.

The 45 saves were the most of the season for the 25-year-old.

Gems vs. Fort Wayne, 6-3 loss

Just one game after holding their opponent to one goal, the Dayton Gems had a rough outing as they gave up six goals to the Fort Wayne Komets on Friday night and lost 6-3.

Fort Wayne's ability to capitalize on powerplay opportunities played a big role in the game. The Komet's scored three times on four powerplay chances.

Meanwhile, the Gems were given 11 powerplay chances and scored on just one of them.

Gems vs. Fort Wayne, 4-0 loss

The Gems lost their sixth straight game to the Komets late Sunday afternoon. The 4-0 shutout is also the second time this month the Komets have held Dayton scoreless.

The Komets took 31 shots in the game, including 18 in the first period. The Gems hadn't allowed the Komets to take that many shots in a single period since Dec. 22, when the Komets took 21 shots in a single frame.

Fort Wayne's effort paid off early on as the Komets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Craig Cescon and Kaleigh Schrock each scored in the opening frame to give the Komets the lead.

Despite outshooting the Komets 27-13 in the final two periods of the game, Dayton was unable to make up any ground. The Komets scored two more times in the second period as they went on defeat Dayton.

Make-up game this Tuesday, Feb. 22

The Dayton Gems will be playing their make-up game against Bloomington on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at Hara Arena.

The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 2, but was rescheduled due to weather.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
