Shots from the Point for February 21, 2011

February 21, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

CHL Headlines for Monday, February 21

President ‚¬â„¢s Day Schedule

There are two games on the slate on President ‚¬â„¢s Day with the hottest team in the Berry Conference, the Texas Brahmas (26-15-5), hosting the Wichita Thunder (26-19-4) and the Bloomington PrairieThunder (27-16-4) hosting the Quad City Mallards (28-22-1). The Brahmas have been the story in recent weeks winning five straight games and posting an 11-3-2 mark since Jan. 7. Texas is alone in second place in the Berry Conference with a one point lead over Bossier-Shreveport and Tulsa. Wichita is coming off a one-sided loss to Tulsa on Saturday night, 5-1, and have posted a 3-4-1 mark in their last eight games. The PThunder and Mallards will be battling for the outright claim to third place in the Turner Conference with Bloomington currently leading Quad City by a point. The Flock has handed the PrairieThunder six losses in the eight meetings thus far.

Rush Driving Towards History

When the Rapid City Rush (32-17-4) and the Colorado Eagles (31-18-3) get together it is always a game to watch. But on Wednesday, when the rivals square off at the Budweiser Events Center there will be a little more on the line as the defending CHL Champion Rush come into the game on a franchise record 13-game win streak. The Rush are just two wins away from tying the CHL record for consecutive wins which sits at 15 games and is held by the very same Eagles (2006-07) and the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs (2007-08). The Rush will also be looking to match the CHL record of consecutive road wins on Wednesday as their nine-game road streak is one shy of the CHL record held by four different teams (most recently the 2001-02 Odessa Jackalopes). Despite their current hot stretch, the Rush have not been able to put much distance between themselves and the second place Eagles as they lead by a slim three points. Colorado has been hot as well goi ng 10-3-1 in their last 14 games. The Eagles have won seven of the 10 meetings this season against the Rush.

Komets Perfect Weekend

The Fort Wayne Komets (24-20-5) continued their climb up the standings in the Turner Conference leapfrogging the Dayton Gems for seventh place thanks to a perfect 3-0 weekend. The Komets started their successful 72 hour run with a 6-3 home win over the Dayton Gems. Tab Lardner scored a pair of goals and had an assist. On Saturday, the Komets needed a little comeback magic as they fell behind 2-0 before P.C. Drouin, Colin Chaulk and Leo Thomas all scored earning the 3-2 win over Quad City. Fort Wayne capped the weekend with a 33-save shutout performance by Nick Boucher in a 4-0 win over Dayton. The Komets are 16-5-2 in 2011 and are now just three points behind the Wichita Thunder for sixth place in the Turner.

By the Numbers

120:39- The number of consecutive minutes the Missouri Mavericks (27-18-5) have played without allowing a goal. Robby Nolan shutout the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Saturday night and Gerry Festa shutout the Evansville IceMen on Sunday.

4- The Allen Americans current losing streak, the longest in franchise history. The Berry Conference leaders are 0-3-1 in their last four games and will look to put an end to that streak on Tuesday night in Laredo against the team with the fewest points in the conference. Allen then heads to Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday night to face the team that laid the first two losses during the four-game slide on the Americans.

19- The current point streak of Tulsa ‚¬â„¢s Chad Costello who scored goals in both games this past weekend after his return from the American Hockey League ‚¬â„¢s Lake Erie Monsters. Costello has 40 points (17-23@) during his streak and is currently second in the league in scoring trailing only Odessa ‚¬â„¢s Sebastien Thinel (77 points).

21- The number of points that Texas forward Greg Hogeboom has over his last 11 games registering nine goals and 12 assists. The forward was named the Oakley CHL Player of the Week on Monday thanks to his four goals and six assists in last week ‚¬â„¢s three wins for the Brahmas.

The Thunder out-gunned the Tulsa Oilers 53-12 on Saturday night but still lost the game 5-1. Back on Feb. 11, the Thunder outshot the RGV Killer Bees 46-17 but still lost that game 5-3. Wichita is 17-16-2 when outshooting their opponents this season.

9- The current road winless streak of the Arizona Sundogs who are 0-7-2 in their last nine road contests winning the last time on Dec. 11 at Rio Grande Valley. The Sundogs will play at Odessa on Friday and Saturday. The Jacks have lost six straight home games.

-The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees have points in six of their last seven games going 4-1-2 in that span. The Bees will host the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Tuesday night, a team they have beaten in their last two head-to-head match-ups (Dec. 16/17).
