Chicago Wolves News Release
Chicago Wolves center Dan Snyder has been named the team¹s 2001-02 HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/American Hockey League Man of the Year. One player from each AHL team has been recognized for his outstanding commitments to his local community and charitable organizations during the 2001-02 season.
Snyder served as a player spokesman for the Wolves¹ most successful educational program, ³Read to Succeed,² sponsored by Fisher Nuts, which has reached nearly a half-million children in seven seasons. The 24-year-old forward visited numerous libraries to speak about the role that education plays in his life as a professional athlete and to encourage children to spend more time in libraries; to read recreationally; and to understand the importance of education.
Snyder was the first Wolves player to volunteer for the new ³Adopt-A-Dog² program, in which the Chicago Department of Animal Care and Control brings dogs who are in need of a home to the Allstate Arena during select Wolves games, allowing fans the opportunity to adopt the dogs on the spot. To go the extra step, Snyder created ³Dan Snyder¹s Dog Pound,² which rewards every fan who adopts a dog with an autographed picture. He also came up with the idea to display pictures of dogs that need to be adopted on chicagowolves.com to provide more exposure. Because of Snyder¹s efforts, nearly 80 dogs have been adopted this season.
³It¹s special when a player comes to me and asks to get involved with community events, and Dan was one of those,² said Courtney Mahoney, Wolves director of community relations and game operations. ³He is committed to so many endeavors off the ice, and he has shown incredible passion and dedication to the Chicago area community and its children.²
Snyder is now a finalist for the AHL¹s 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 27 individual-team award winners to be honored during the 2002 Calder Cup Finals as the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner.
This award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-1996), registering 169 points (70 goals, 99 assists) in 207 games. He also played in 35 National Hockey League games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
