Norfolk's Tyler Arnason Named AHL's Outstanding Rookie

Published on April 9, 2002 under American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

SPRINGFIELD, MA . . . The American Hockey League announced today that Tyler Arnason of the Norfolk Admirals has been named the winner of the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL's outstanding rookie for the 2001-02 season, as voted by AHL players and media in each of the league's 27 cities. In 60 games with Norfolk this season, Arnason recorded 26 goals and 30 assists for 56 points, helping the Admirals to the South Division championship. The St. Cloud State product made his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks on Feb. 13, then headed to St. John's, Nfld., the next day to participate in the 2002 AHL All-Star Game. Arnason has been with Chicago exclusively since late February, where he has totaled three goals and an assist in 17 contests. Born in Oklahoma City and raised in Winnipeg, Arnason, 23, is the son of Chuck Arnason, who himself was a 30-goal scorer and Calder Cup champion as a rookie in 1972. The Dudley "Red" Garrett Award, which was first presented in 1947, honors the late "Red" Garrett, a promising young player who gave his life during World War II while serving in the Royal Canadian Navy. Garrett split his only pro season, 1942-43, between Providence and the New York Rangers. Previous winners of the Garrett Award include Terry Sawchuk (1949), Roger Crozier (1964), Rick Middleton (1974), Darryl Sutter (1980), Pelle Lindbergh (1981), Steve Thomas (1985), Ron Hextall (1986), Brett Hull (1987), Donald Audette (1990), Felix Potvin (1992), Darcy Tucker (1996) and Daniel Briere (1998). Now in its 66th season, the AHL serves as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 75 percent of all players to compete in the NHL this season have been AHL graduates, and over 300 players have taken the ice in both leagues in 2001-02. The Calder Cup 2002 Playoffs get underway today, with 20 teams vying for the honor of claiming the league's coveted championship trophy.
