D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (December 8, 2014) - D.C. United has announced that the club has acquired midfielder Andrew Driver and the Houston Dynamo's 2016 Fourth Round SuperDraft selection in a trade that will see goalkeeper Joe Willis and defender Samuel Inkoom head to Houston.
A versatile and high-energy outside midfielder, Driver has made 60 appearances (42 starts) for the Dynamo in the last two seasons, including in all 34 regular season games (22 starts) in 2014, registering one assist. He had three goals and one assist in 2013.
Driver initially came to MLS on loan after seven seasons with Heart of Midlothian in Scotland, where he made more than 150 appearances. He has represented both England and Scotland at the international youth level.
"We would like to thank both Joe Willis and Samuel Inkoom for their contributions to our club, and we wish them the best of luck in the future," said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. "In Andrew Driver, we have acquired a midfielder in the prime of his career."
Selected in the third round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of Denver, Willis has spent the last four seasons with the Black-and-Red. Willis appeared in 23 games (22 starts) with a record of 6-13-14 with four shutouts and 71 saves. Willis was instrumental in United's 2013 U.S. Open Cup title run as well as its 2014 CONCACAF Champions League group stage. In 2013, Willis went a perfect 4-0 leading Untied to the U.S. Open Cup Championship game, and in 2014 he went a perfect 3-0 in the CONCACAF Group stage.
United acquired Inkoom in September. The Ghanaian defender appeared in two games (one start) and recorded one assist in MLS action. In three CONCACAF Champions League matches Inkoom recorded two assists for the Black-and-Red.
