Orlando City & NYCFC Prepare as Available Player List Released for 2014 Expansion Draft

NEW YORK (Monday, Dec. 8, 2014) - Ahead of the highly anticipated 2014 MLS Expansion Draft, Major League Soccer today announced the available and protected player lists. The draft will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 2:00 p.m. ET between New York City Football Club and Orlando City Soccer Club. The event will be streamed live on MLSsoccer.com .
Through the Expansion Priority Draft, Orlando City earned the first selection in the Expansion Draft. Each current MLS club has had the opportunity to protect 11 players from their 2014 roster leaving some notable players available for selection come Wednesday, including New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill, and Portland Timbers goalkeeper and 2013 Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year winner Donovan Ricketts.
Generation adidas players (who did not graduate at the end of the 2014 season) and Homegrown players on a club's supplemental roster are automatically protected and do not count against a team's 11 protected roster spots. Designated Players do not have to be protected unless the player has a no trade clause in his contract. Once two players have been claimed from a team's non-protected roster, that team is eliminated from the expansion draft and may not lose any further players. In addition, once a player has been claimed from a club's non-protected roster, that club may move a player from its non-protected roster to its protected roster.
