LA Galaxy Legend Landon Donovan Wins MLS Record Sixth MLS Cup Title
December 8, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
CARSON, Calif. - Landon Donovan set yet another record in his final game as a professional on Sunday, capturing his sixth MLS Cup title when the LA Galaxy beat the New England Revolution, 2-1 in extra time at the StubHub Center.
Donovan breaks a tie with former player Jeff Agoos and current Colorado Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan, who have both won five MLS Cup titles. Donovan won two titles with the San Jose Earthquakes (2001 and 2003) and four with the Galaxy (2005, 2011, 2012, 2014).
Donovan also holds the record for most appearances in an MLS Cup final (7) and has now played 726 minutes in MLS Cup finals, the most of any player in league history. His only loss in the league's title game came with the Galaxy in 2009, against Real Salt Lake.
Although he did not appear in the game on Sunday, Galaxy defender Todd Dunivant also captured his fifth MLS Cup title. He won one with the Earthquakes (2003) and the past four with the Galaxy.
Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena, meanwhile, won his third MLS Cup title with the Galaxy and fifth overall. He won titles with D.C. United in 1996 and 1997 before taking over in LA and winning crowns there in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
No other head coach has won more than two MLS Cup titles.
Galaxy associate head coach Dave Sarachan won his third MLS Cup with the Galaxy and his sixth overall on Sunday. He won three with D.C. United (1996, 1997 and 1999) before winning the past three with the Galaxy.
