
D.C. United Acquire Estonian National Team Forward Erik Sorga

Loudoun County, Va. - D.C. United have acquired Estonian National Team forward Erik Sorga on a permanent transfer from FC Flora Tallinn in the Estonian Meistriliiga (First Division) after he initially signed with the Black-and-Red's USL Championship affiliate, Loudoun United FC on Jan. 8, 2020. Sorga scored his first goal for the Black-and-Red in the 1-1 draw against Nashville SC in a preseason friendly on Feb. 19.
"Erik has impressed the coaching staff in preseason training since joining Loudoun United earlier this year," Dave Kasper, D.C. United General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations, said. "He was a proven goalscorer in the Estonian league and has represented his country at the senior international level. At only 20-years-old, we're excited about his potential and we're hoping to create a pathway for him to become a successful attacking threat in MLS for years to come."
Sorga made his national team debut for Estonia in a 2-1 loss to Northern Ireland in European Qualifiers on June 8, 2019 The forward competed in five of Estonia's European Qualifiers in 2019 and scored his first international goal against Belarus on Sept. 6, 2019. In total, Sorga has scored one goal in six national team appearances, totaling 392 minutes played.
The 20-year-old signed his first professional contract with FC Flora of the Estonian Meistriliiga (First Division) on Jan. 1, 2017 after playing for the Under-21 side. Sorga made his professional debut for the club as a substitute on Sept. 23, 2016 in a 4-0 win against Rakvere Tarvas in league play as a 17-year-old. He scored his first goal in his third professional appearance in a 7-0 win against JK Viljandi on May 5, 2017. In total, Sorga has scored 78 goals and recorded nine assists in 91 appearances for FC Flora across all competitions. Sorga was a part of the FC Flora side that won the Estonian Meistriliiga in 2017 and 2019. He won the league and team golden boot after scoring 31 goals in the 2019 season to lead FC Flora to the domestic title.
The Tallinn, Estonia native was a product of his hometown academy, Tallinn Jalgpalli Klubi Legion, before joining the FC Flora Under-21's on Feb. 21, 2016.
