Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
COLUMBIA, South Carolina - Mike Wirll's natural hat trick in the first period was all the offense the Cincinnati Cyclones would need in a 3-2 win at Columbia on Tuesday night (April 3). Cedrick Desjardins stopped 21 shots in collecting his 24th win of the season. The win moves the Cyclones into a tie with Dayton for first place in the North Division standings.
The Cyclones struck for three goals in the first period. The first came at 3:38, when Mike Wirll netted his 45th goal on the power play from Nick Martens and Jason Deitsch. The lead extended to 2-0, when Wirll hammered home his 46th at 7:57 from Travis LIsabeth and Barett Ehgoetz. The third goal also came from Wirll, completing the natural hat trick, at 10:04, as Ehgoetz had the assist. The three goals marked the second hat trick of the season by a Cyclones player (Jean-Michel Daoust on Feb. 16 in a 5-4 overtime win at Johnstown). The Cyclones outshot the Inferno, 14-6, in the opening period.
Wirll's first goal was the 100th in his pro career.
There was no scoring in the second period, with Cincinnati outshooting Columbia, 13-5, in the frame.
Columbia scored a pair of goals in the third to close the gap to the final of 3-2. Brendan Cook netted his 15th goal at 6:34 and Luke Fulghum tallied his 25th at 19:49 to finish the scoring.
The Cyclones are now 37-27-4-2, second in the North Division two points behind Dayton. Columbia is 27-34-4-5 on the season, seventh in the South Division. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena for a Thursday night (April 5) showdown for first place with the Dayton Bombers at 7:30pm.
