Cyclones Use Night of Firsts in 5-2 Win Over Trenton

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Ben McLeod scored a pair of goals and Jamie Coghlan added three assists as the Cincinnati Cyclones pulled off a 5-2 win over the Trenton Devils on Saturday night. The win let Cincinnati maintain fourth place in the North Division standings.

Several Cyclones registered 'firsts' on the night. Dustin Sproat, his first Cyclones goal. Jamie Coghlan had his first Cyclones point and Justin Johnson had his first 'Gordie Howe Hat Trick' (goal, assist, fight).

The Cyclones opened the first period with a pair of first period goals. Rookie Mark Van Guilder scored 1:08 into the game taking a pass from Jimmy Kilpatrick and pushing it past Gerald Coleman. Jamie Coghlan registered his first point as a Cyclone on the second assist. Justin Johnson extended the lead with his second goal of the season at 3:53 on the power play from Dustin Sproat and J.T. Wyman. Johnson fired a shot from the slot over the glove hand of Coleman to net his first goal with Cincinnati. The shots on goal favored the Cyclones, 16-6, in the opening period.

Cincinnati opened a 3-0 lead when Ben McLeod netted his fifth goal of the season on backhander at 2:34 from Coghlan. Trenton's Brad Snetsinger picked up his third goal in two nights and his seventh of the season at 6:37. Cincinnati restored the three goal edge when Dustin Sproat registered his third of the season and first as a Cyclone at 18:05 as Frederic St. Denis and Johnson added the helpers. The assist by Johnson completed his 'Gordie Howe Hat Trick' (goal, assist and fight).

McLeod's second goal of the night and sixth of the year came at 10:47 of the third to extend the lead to 5-1. Brian O'Hnaley and Coghlan had the assists. An Eric Castonguay score at 13:41 for Trenton ended the scoring and the game ended with a 5-2 Cincinnati victory. Trenton outshot Cincinnati, 12-5, in the third. The Cyclones outshot the Devils for the game, 33-26.

Ryan Nie took the victory, turning aside 24 shots. Gerald Coleman stopped 24 shots in taking the loss before yielding to Charlie Effinger at the start of the third period.

The Cyclones are now 17-15-5 on the season, while Trenton is 15-15-3. The Cyclones will be in action on Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm with a contest at Wheeling. That game will be carried on MAX-FM (97.7 and 99.5). The next game at U.S. Bank Arena will be on Wednesday night (January 14) when Wheeling is in for a 7:30pm clash.

NOTE: With the crowd of 4605, the Cyclones are averaging 25.4 percent more fans than 2007-08 through 19 home games. That is the second-largest improvement from last year through 19 games of any professional hockey team in North America (Tulsa-CHL is up 42.0%, Bridgeport-AHL is up 25.3% and Springfield-AHL is up 24.3%). Last year, Cincinnati's season attendance improved 36.8 percent over 2006-07-the biggest increase in all of professional hockey.
