Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Alaska Aces scored five times in the first period and held back a furious comeback from the Bakersfield Condors in a 6-5 win in front of 5,316 fans at Rabobank Arena Friday night.
The Condors (11-19-4, 26pts) opened the scoring early in the first period, when RW Mike Wirll netted his seventh of the year at 3:24. The Aces quickly matched it, but C Dave Bonk potted his first of the night at 9:01 to once again put the Condors in front. However, Alaska pounced on Bakersfield, lighting the lamp four more times on starting G Yutaka Fukufuji in the period to take a 5-2 lead into the dressing room. Included in the scoring for Alaska were D Derick Martin, RW Brett Hemingway, his brother RW Colin Hemingway and C Alexandre Imbault.
With Fukufuji pulled to start the second, Bakersfield mounted an assault. They fired a season-high 25 shots on goal in the period and pulled back within two at 10:46 to make it 5-3. But Alaska (20-13-2, 42pts) answered just under two minutes later with a goal by F Luke Erickson, chipping one past G Dave McKee to make it 6-3 after 40 minutes. It was the only blemish on the night for McKee, who made 23 saves in relief.
Bakersfield fought to claw their way back in the third period, as Wirll notched his second of the night to make it 6-4 at 12:22. It was his second shorthanded tally of the season. A goal in the final minute of regulation by rookie F Matt Pope brought the crowd to their feet one last time, as he snapped home is 20th of the season to make it a one-goal game and account for the final score.
