Victoria defeats Ontario 5-2 to extend franchise win streak to 14

Victoria, BC - In a Friday night match-up the Victoria Salmon Kings and Ontario Reign met in the first of a two-game weekend set. Goaltender Jonathan Boutin started in net for the Kings while the Reign countered with John Murray.

The Salmon Kings scored the opening goal on the power play at 12:23 of the first period. Captain Wes Goldie converted an Olivier Labelle rebound under Murray for his 30th goal of the season. Just 23 seconds later at 12:46, Darryl Lloyd made it a two-goal lead after firing a wrist shot off the rush from the faceoff circle that eluded Murray. Lloyd's goal was his ninth of the year. Dylan Yeo extended the lead to three under a minute later. At 13:34, Yeo put his 10th goal of the season past Murray off a slap shot from the point. The Salmon Kings three goals in 1:11 set a new franchise record, surpassing the three goals scored in 2:13 on December 16, 2006 at Bakersfield. The Salmon Kings would take the three goal lead into the first intermission.

The Reign cut the deficit to two goals at 13:08 the middle frame, as forward Geoff Walker scored an unassisted goal past Boutin for his 11th of the season. A streaking Todd Jackson scored Ontario's second goal at 18:19 of the second period, taking a Brad Mehalko feed from behind the net and beating Boutin at the top shelf. Jackson's goal was his 10th of the season. The second period would end with the Salmon Kings leading 3-2.

Wes Goldie sealed a Salmon Kings 14th straight victory at 18:47 of the third period, scoring a power play goal into an Ontario empty net. Darryl Lloyd added a second empty-netter at 19:29. Salmon Kings 5 Reign 2.

Victoria finished 3/7 = 43% on the power play, while Ontario finished 0/3= 0%. Final shots were 40-39 for Ontario.

The Salmon Kings 14th win a row is now tied for second-longest in ECHL history, matching Knoxville from Dec. 28, 1993-Jan. 29, 1994 and Louisiana from Nov. 23-Dec. 22, 2001. Cincinnati holds the ECHL record with 17 consecutive victories, stretching from Jan 16 - Feb 29 2008.
